How does the author describe racism in America towards Japan in the Second World War? → The author shows the racism in American from a lot of sources; such as cartoons, official documents, advertisements, movies, and songs. The mass media drew Japanese people as an immature children (p.142) and animals. Especially, cartoons depicted the Japanese as monkeys, apes, rats, bugs, beetles, lice, and other kinds of creatures that had to be wiped out. (pp. 181-189) An example is that one restaurant sign on the West Coast said This Restaurant Poisons Both Rats and Japs. (p. 92) Also, extreme expressions were used in military. Admiral William Halsey s famous call to his soldiers was Kill Japs, kill Japs, kill more Japs. (p. 36) Even genocide was supported by high-level officers. In 1943 the Navy representative to the committee insisted of the almost total elimination of the Japanese as a race. Moreover, the chairman of the War Manpower Commission asserted the extermination of the Japanese in total. (p. 55) However, these descriptions also could be applied to the racism in the earliest West. For example, the Spaniards treated the Indians of the New World as savages, children, madmen, beasts, and evil. (p.149) Therefore, in my view, racism in America towards Japan was one of the ways to evoke an image of their enemy and to alert the Americans. 2.
